Siemens to supply 3G radio network to Malaysian mobile operator Maxis

Malaysia’s leading mobile operator, Maxis Communications Berhad (Maxis), has signed a three-year framework partnership with Siemens Communications to de-liver its 3G/W-CDMA radio equipment in the Klang Valley and northern region. Aside from full turnkey supply and installation of the Siemens equipment, the contract also covers its maintenance and comprehensive services, and upgrades to HSDPA early next year. HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Pack Access) allows subscribers to download data on their laptop or PDA with rates of up to 14 Mbit/s.

“We have spent considerable effort and investment in optimizing our 3G network and handsets, and making sure that they work compatibly with one another. This remains our top priority. As such, we are pleased to have Siemens on board to further ensure that our customers will continue to enjoy a truly unique maxis3G experience,“ said Dato Jamaludin Ibrahim, CEO of Maxis Communications Berhad.

Seven months ago, Siemens was awarded the contract to supply Maxis with core switching equipment and security services for its 3G network. With this new contract, Siemens will provide a total 3G network for Maxis to enable its nationwide rollout of Maxis 3G services. Siemens will cover northern Malaysia by the end of this year and Klang Valley by early 2006.

“With this order for Siemens Communications, we further strengthen our market posi-tion and our world market leadership as a supplier of 3G technology. The signing of this agreement is also another landmark milestone of our partnership with Maxis which has grown significantly over the last ten years. Just recently for example we could announce the installation of our charging-solution charge@once into Maxis’ network,” said Chris-toph Caselitz, President of the Mobile Networks division at Siemens Communications.

Over 90% of the world’s 3G subscribers are communicating with 3G network technology provided by Siemens/NEC. Market independent industry analysts position Sie-mens/NEC in the 3G/W-CDMA market as No.1 with regard to commercially installed NodeBs (source: Multimedia Research Institute, Tokyo, April 05).
