Wiener Linien is Vienna's mass transit operator, carrying around 800 million passengers a year on its metros, trams and buses. The Vienna metro is one of the safest and most modern underground systems in the world. One reason for this is its signaling and train control system. The Viennese metro system currently consists of 5 lines, stretching over 70 kilometers and serving 85 stations. It carries around 500 million passengers a year. The city of Vienna's declared aim for the year 2020 is to achieve a so-called modal split in which 40 percent of all trips in the city are made by public transportation, thereby cutting the percentage of individual motorized journeys from 35 percent to 25 percent.

With this ambitious aim in mind, the fourth phase of the project to extend the underground will be realized between 2010 and 2015. The U1 line will be extended by around six kilometers to the south, with the U2 stretching another four kilometers to the east in order to link up important urban development areas to the highly efficient metro system. Besides two electronic interlockings for the line extensions, Siemens will also supply a further electronic interlocking for the underground's oldest maintenance depot and integrate all of the new interlockings in the central control room. Sicas ECC (Siemens Computer Aided Signaling Element Control Computer) with the LZB513 continuous automatic train control system will be used together with the Vicos OC111 operations control system. These products have already been approved on the customer's U1 and U2 lines, where they have been in service for years. What is more, Siemens will also supply an interlocking for the purpose of training maintenance staff as well as dispatcher training places for the operating personnel.
Siemens was awarded the order following a two-stage public EU call for tenders. Besides our modern and field-proven technologies including Sicas ECC, Vicos OC111 and LZB513, it was the perfect, coordinated interaction among all the major components such as interlockings, automatic train control system and operator consoles in the operations control center that finally convinced the customer. Simple integration into the existing systems was another major factor.
